Texas Graded on Environmental Issues. We Can do Better!

Texas only recycling 8%....placing them in the bottom ten of all US states.

Texas is known for its robust urban areas, thriving business communities, and vast areas of fertile farmland. Unfortunately, it is also known for ranking in the bottom ten for recycling. With an 8% recycling rate, the Lone Star state is adding to the already strained Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfills.

In a recent report conducted by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the per capita disposal rate for 2022 was 7.25 pounds per person per day. That is up from 2021 when it was a rate of 7.09 pounds. Active landfills have decreased from 790 in 1986 to 200 in 2022 due to stricter regulations resulting in fewer places to dump waste.

What is Texas Doing about it?

Recently, Texas began creating what is called “monofill” areas. A monofil is a landfill that is intended to be used for only one type of waste.  This helps with breaking down waste and not simply dumping it into the ground. Monofills are considered the landfills of the future. Texas went from 4 in 2013 to 11 in 2022.

What Can a Texan Do?

Quite simply, do your part!

  • Look for companies that put recycling as part of their mission statement

  • Buy from stores who use paper bags and other recyclable containers

  • Insist that the company you work for is doing their part by having a recycling program and that they use green cleaning products

  • Upcycle as much as possible

Most importantly, hire a professional paper shredding and product destruction company. Many have strong recycling programs in place. Paper can be recycled into new paper. Plastic bottles can be made into sustainable clothing and more. These companies have the facilities and know how to keep as much waste out of Texas landfills as possible. And they provide safe and secure destruction that guarantees complete destruction with paperwork to back it up.
